US Secretary of State to Attend International Conference on Iraq

update

The U.S. State Department has announced that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to Egypt next month to attend an international conference on Iraq.

Spokesman Sean McCormack said Friday in Washington that Rice will participate in a meeting of the International Compact with Iraq, a group of donor nations. McCormack said talks would also include Iraq's neighbors.

McCormack said Rice could have bilateral meetings during the trip, including a possible meeting with Iran's foreign minister.

McCormack said he did not know if Iranian officials would attend the meeting, but if Teheran's foreign minister attends, Rice could meet with him.

The United States suspended diplomatic relations with Iran in 1980.
