NHL: Red Wings, Devils Advance in Playoffs

The Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils have advanced in the National Hockey League playoffs after winning their opening round best-of-seven series Sunday.

Detroit needed two overtime periods to beat the host Calgary Flames 2-1, winning the Western Conference series four-games-to-two. Johan Franzen scored the winning goal.

The Red Wings will next take on the winner of Monday's decisive game seven between the Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks. Dallas rallied from a three-games-to-one deficit to tie the series at three games apiece.

New Jersey won its Eastern Conference series with Tampa Bay four-games-to-two after edging the host Lightning 3-2. Martin Brodeur made 32 saves for the win. The Devils go up against the Ottawa Senators in the next round.

The top-seeded Buffalo Sabres will meet the New York Rangers in the other Eastern Conference series.

The Anaheim Ducks and the San Jose Sharks will go head-to-head in the West.
