English golfer Nick Dougherty has the lead after the first round of the U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The par-70 course was difficult, as predicted, and only two golfers were under par Thursday. Dougherty shot a two-under-par 68 for a one-stroke lead over Angel Cabrera of Argentina.
At even par, two shots off the pace, are American Bubba Watson and Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal. World No. 1 Tiger Woods of the United States is in a group of 16 golfers who shot one-over-par 71, three strokes behind the leader.
Also in that group are world No. 3 Jim Furyk of the United States, No. 7 Vijay Singh of Fiji and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy of Australia.
