Security officials in Cairo say Egyptian police have detained 18 more members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood as part of a crackdown on the banned group.
The men were taken into custody Sunday in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and Sharqiya province, about 90 kilometers north of Cairo.
On Friday, police broke up a Brotherhood meeting in Cairo and detained 16 members. Egyptian prosecutors ordered them held 15 days.
Egypt has arrested many members of the Brotherhood during the past few months.
Although officially banned since 1954, the Brotherhood is Egypt's largest opposition group and frequently fields candidates as independents in Egyptian elections. It controls about one-fifth of the seats in parliament's lower house.
The Muslim Brotherhood says it wants to transform Egypt into an Islamic state through democratic reforms.
