'Halloween' Tops US Weekend Box Office Sales

The summer movie season held one last shock, as Halloween ambushed the U.S. box office championship.

Director Rob Zombie's remake of the 1978 horror classic raked in a record-breaking $31 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend. The previous Labor Day champ, 2005's Transporter 2, took in $20.1 million.

Last weekend's second-place Superbad took in $15.6 million, bringing its total to $92.4 million. Hollywood's top 12 movies registered a $119.6 million box office tally, surpassing the previous Labor Day record of $106.1 million, set in 2003. The industry finished the summer season with a box office total of $4.18 billion since the first weekend in May.

Factoring in higher ticket prices, however, movie attendance did not set a record. Box office tracker Media By Numbers estimates that 610 million tickets were sold, the
