Indonesian Jet Lands Safely After Losing Part of Wing

update

An Indonesian jet has managed to land safely even after a section of its wing broke off in flight late Wednesday.

A spokesman for Indonesia's Batavia Air says Thursday none of the 138 passengers and six crew members on the Boeing 747 jet was hurt during the incident.

A piece of the wing fell off minutes after the plane left the international airport in Jakarta. The spokesman says it was scheduled to fly from Jakarta to Pontianak on Borneo island.

Batavia Airways is one of scores of cheap airlines to appear in Indonesia in recent years, adding to concerns about the safety of flying in the Southeast Asian country. Indonesia suffered a series of deadly accidents earlier this year, including a plane crash in January that killed 102 people.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
