Five Iraqi Soldiers Killed North of Baquba

The U.S. military said Saturday five Iraqi soldiers were killed and two wounded by an improvised explosive device that went off as they searched a house north of Baquba.

Officials said the troops were searching Thursday for al-Qaida members in the village of Abu Tamur when the device was triggered.

The military said one American soldier was also wounded as coalition forces detained nine suspected terrorists and killed one enemy combatant. The military said one of the detainees is a known al-Qaida operative wanted by the Iraqi army for stealing weapons.

The military has been taking measures to curb growing violence in the Baquba area. On Friday, Iraqi authorities imposed a vehicle ban in Baquba after a series of suicide bombings and other attacks in the capital of volatile Diyala province.
