Italian skater Carolina Kostner has withstood a strong challenge from Switzerland's Sarah Meier to retain the European women's figure skating championship in Zagreb, Croatia.
Kostner ended the free skate with 111.97 points and a total of 171.28 overall to become the first Italian woman to capture two European titles.
Meier moved up from fourth to second to take her second straight silver medal with the top free program. The Swiss skater ended with 169.44 points.
Finland's Laura Lepisto finished with 165.65 points for the bronze medal with Julia Sebestyen of Hungary fourth and Kiira Kopri of Finland fifth.
