Florida Blackout Blamed on Fire

Utility officials in Florida say a fire at a county facility caused widespread failures throughout the electrical system that left millions of people without electricity Tuesday.

Authorities say the power loss caused a shutdown at a nuclear power plant in southern Florida, which affected up to four million people. Power has since been restored to most of the state.

Federal authorities said the widespread blackout was not the result of a terrorist attack.

An official at Miami International Airport says the facility is working on a generator backup, and that no airline flight delays have been reported.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
