Police Hunt for Driver of Truck That Killed 54 Burmese Migrant Workers

Authorities in Thailand are looking for the driver of a container truck in which 54 migrant workers from Burma suffocated to death this week while they were being smuggled into the country.

Police believe the 38-year-old driver may be hiding out on the southern Thai resort island of Phuket, where the truck was headed. Police are also looking for members of the smuggling ring who helped arrange the trip.

The driver fled the scene late Wednesday after realizing that some of the 120 people inside the container were dead. Thai court officials say 50 of the adult survivors will face charges of illegal entry in court.

The International Labor Organization says the deaths show that Thailand's formal labor recruitment system is not working.

An East Asia director for the ILO tells the German Press Agency (DPA) that the labor organization will launch an investigation into the incident, and that it is closely monitoring developments in the case.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
