The government of Qatar is expressing "astonishment" at Ethiopia's decision to break off diplomatic ties.
In a statement late Tuesday, the Qatari Foreign Ministry denied Ethiopia's claims that Qatar is trying to hurt Ethiopia's security and destabilize the Horn of Africa.
The ministry said Ethiopia's accusations are baseless and without truth.
Ethiopia announced the decision to break off relations with Qatar on Monday. In a statement, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry accused Qatar of supporting rebels in Ethiopia and Islamist insurgents in Somalia, where Ethiopia has thousands of troops supporting the Somali government.
The statement also cited Qatar's strong ties with Ethiopia's rival Eritrea, and the output of its media outlets. The popular Arab satellite channel al-Jazeera is based in Qatar.
