Influential American Artist Robert Rauschenberg Dead at 82

Prolific and influential American artist Robert Rauschenberg died Monday at the age of 82.

Rauschenberg is remembered as a modern art innovator whose work blended painting and sculpture and often incorporated everyday objects. In 1955, he created one of his best-recognized pieces, titled Bed, which entails a quilt, sheet and pillow splashed with oil paint and framed on a wall.

In the 1960s, Rauschenberg used a technique to transfer printed photographs from newspapers into his work, such as images of former President John F. Kennedy. These commentaries on modern society contributed to the pop art movement, made famous by Andy Warhol.

Rauschenberg worked alongside another influential pop artist, Jasper Johns, for many years. He also collaborated with musician John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham.
