Fire at Berlin Philharmonic

update

Firefighters battled a blaze for hours at the home of the Berlin Philharmonic Tuesday before bringing it under control.

About 170 firefighters rushed to the scene during a performance as thick clouds of smoke billowed from the roof of the landmark building located near Berlin's Potsdamer Platz.

A fire department spokesman says firefighters were forced to cut holes and peel back sections of the metal roof covering the main concert hall to get at the burning wood, insulation and tarpaper.

Orchestra members and people in the audience were safely evacuated from the building. The musicians and staff also managed to remove most of the musical instruments

Authorities have reported no injuries, but officials cited welding during repair work in the roof area as a possible cause.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
