Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has launched a new foundation dedicated to interfaith understanding.
Mr. Blair said at the launch in New York Friday that people cannot understand the modern world unless they understand the importance of religious faith.
The goals of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation are to fight religious extremism, work to overcome poverty and educate people about religions other than their own.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton opened the event, saying the former British leader's faith is genuine and deep.
Mr. Blair converted to Catholicism in December after stepping down as prime minister last June. He had previously been a member of the Church of England, but had regularly attended Catholic Mass with his wife and children.
