Italian authorities are searching for at least 10 illegal migrants who
ended up in the water off Italy's Mediterranean island of Lampedusa
when a Coast Guard vessel approached their small boat.
Rescuers
recovered three bodies and picked up about 60 survivors from the small
boat that was carrying the immigrants toward the Italian island.
Patrols intercepted another boat with at least 350 immigrants on board
nearby.
Thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to cross the
Mediterranean annually in small boats, usually from Libya, in efforts
to reach Italy and other European Union countries.
Italian authorities detain those intercepted in temporary centers and expel those without families or jobs in Italy.
