US Senator Accused of Making False Statements

A leading U.S. Republican Party senator has been indicted for allegedly making false statements related to his public office.

Federal law enforcement officials announced the seven-count indictment Tuesday against Ted Stevens of Alaska.

The senator has been under investigation for his connections to an oil services contractor who pleaded guilty last year to bribing lawmakers in Stevens' home state.

The contractor oversaw the renovation of Stevens' Alaska home.

Last year, federal agents searched the senator's home as part of a corruption investigation.

Stevens is one of the longest serving senators in U.S. history. He has served as a U.S. senator since 1968 and has long been a member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.
