Burmese Comedian Appears in Court After  2-Month Detention

Burma's most famous comedian and three others have appeared in court after being detained for almost two months.

Popular comedian, Zarganar, was arrested June 4 on allegations of public order offenses. He appeared at a closed hearing on Wednesday conducted inside Rangoon's Insein prison.

The charges carry a maximum punishment of two years imprisonment.

A lawyer involved in the case, Aung Thein, said Friday a trial will start on August 7.

Relatives of Zarganar and the three other detainees said they have not received information on their loved one's cases.

Zarganar has been detained previously for his political activities. Last year he was arrested for his support of monks seeking freedom and democracy.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
