Doctors at a Los Angeles-area hospital got a surprise Monday when a woman who was expected to deliver seven babies unexpectedly gave birth to an eighth child.
The six boys and and two girls were delivered within a five-minute span by Cesarean section. They were born nine weeks premature, weighing between 680 grams and 1.5 kilograms. Two of the babies have been placed on respirators.
One of the lead doctors in the 46-member delivery team said it is easy to miss a baby when so many were expected, despite the use of ultrasound (an imaging machine that helps doctors see inside the human body).
The hospital says the mother is doing well, and is planning to breast feed all eight babies.
The babies are only the second known set of octuplets born in the United States. The first arrived in 1998 to a couple in the southwestern city of Houston, Texas. The smallest of the children died a week later, while the surviving babies recently celebrated their 10th birthday.
