New Zealand Couple Missing After $6M Banking Error

Police in New Zealand say a couple has disappeared after their bank mistakenly deposited more than $6 million into their account.

Detective David Harvey says police have contacted Interpol for assistance in locating the couple, who are believed to have left the country.

Police and bank officials say the couple applied for a $6,000 bank overdraft. But Westpac bank accidentally deposited 1,000 times that amount into their business account.

Harvey said Westpac Bank recovered some of the funds, but did not say how much the couple withdrew before disappearing.

The bank said it has started an internal investigation to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

The detective declined to release the couple's names, saying only that the man and woman ran a gas station in the northern town of Rotorua.

The BP station was closed Thursday when reporters visited. Local residents expressed surprise at the accusations against the couple.
