China: At Least 80 Feared Buried in Landslide

Chinese state media say at least 80 people may have been buried by a massive landslide Friday in southwestern China.

The Xinhua news agency reports millions of cubic meters of rock filled a valley in an iron ore mining area in Chongqing Municipality.

The report says mine workers, residents and passers by were believed trapped.

Local officials said rescuers had pulled seven injured people from under the debris. Four were seriously hurt.

Xinhua says the landslide also cut off power and communications.

China's mining industry is known for deadly accidents due to poor safety regulations. Many mines are operating illegally to satisfy China's growing industry demands.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
