Berlin Wins Spanish Asturias Prize

The city of Berlin has been awarded one of Spain's prestigious Prince of Asturias prizes in recognition of its contribution to promoting peace and harmony.

Organizers say the German capital city receives the "concord" prize for improving East-West relations, following the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago.

The award is one of eight Asturias prizes bestowed each year in areas such as the arts, sciences, international cooperation and communication. Each award is worth $72,000.

The prizes are named after Spain's Crown Prince Felipe, whose formal title is Prince of Asturias, a region in northern Spain.
