Underdog British Golfer Takes Lead in Sweden - 2001-08-02

update

Anthony Wall of Britain has taken a three-shot lead after the first round at the Scandinavian Masters golf tournament in Malmo, Sweden.

Just two weeks after he failed to qualify for the British Open, the 26-year-old Wall shot a 9-under-par 63 Thursday, missing the Barseback course record by only one stroke.

The Englishman's 10 birdies enabled him to widen his lead over two far more renowned British golfers, Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke, as well as Soren Hansen of Denmark and Swede Peter Hedblom. All four are tied for second place after shooting 6-under-par rounds of 66.

Many golfers are using this event to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team which will play the United States from September 28 through 30.

Clarke is the current Ryder Cup points leader, but two-time Scandinavian Masters winner Montgomerie is eighth in the standings and is trying to solidify his position this weekend.
