Saturday, August 4, marked the 100th birthday of the legendary jazz trumpeter, singer and "International Ambassador of Jazz," Louis Armstrong.
Until his death in 1971, Armstrong maintained that he was born on July 4, 1900.
But in 1988, his original certificate of baptism was found in a church in New Orleans confirming that he was indeed born on August 4, 1901.
VOA’s Robin Rupli describes the week-long Louis Armstrong Centennial Celebration in New Orleans, where musicians, scholars and Armstrong friends from all over the world are gathering to pay tribute. This includes the re-naming of the city's airport, which will now be called the Louis Armstrong International Airport.
