Canadian Golfer Takes Lead at Mercedes Championship Tournament - 2002-01-04

Canadian golfer Mike Weir has taken the early lead at the Mercedes Championships in Kapalua, Hawaii. The event features only the winners of tournament titles in 2001.

Weir fired a 10-under-par 63 Thursday on a sun-drenched course that was not swept by wind as some weather forecasts had predicted. American Frank Lickliter finished his round at 7-under-par, while Scott Verplank, Cameron Beckman, Chris Dimarco, David Duval and defending champion Jim Furyk were at six-under-par.

World-number-one golfer Tiger Woods of the United States completed his round at 5-under-par, five shots off the lead.

The tournament is being played on the par-73 Plantation Course in Kapalua. The winner gets $630,000.
