Gottwald Wins 4th World Cup Nordic Combined Event of Season - 2002-01-06


Austrian skier Felix Gottwald has won his fourth World Cup Nordic combined event of the season, but German Ronny Ackermann remains the overall standings leader.

Gottwald ended the event in Schonach, Germany 2.8 seconds ahead of Finnish skier Samppa Lajunen. Ackermann was third, 18.2 seconds back in the standings.

American Todd Lodwick finished fourth, 25.1 seconds off the lead. For Gottwald it was the 10th World Cup title of his career in the event, which combines ski jumping and cross-country skiing.

Ackermann leads the overall standings with 1,220 points after 10 events. Gottwald is second just 20 points back in the standings. Lajunen is third overall, 265 points off the lead.

Meanwhile, Sweden's Per Elofsson has extended his lead in the World Cup Cross Country skiing standings by winning a men's 10-kilometer pursuit event in Val di Femme, Italy.

Elofsson finished the race in 46 minutes, 45.8 seconds, 31.4 seconds ahead of Norway's Thomas Alsgaard. Another Norwegian, Anders Aukland finished third.

Elofsson leads the overall standings with 549 points after 11 events. Aukland is in second place with 307 points. Alsgaard is third.

Meanwhile in a women's 5 kilometer pursuit race, Russian Larissa Lasutina won in 25 minutes, 26.1seconds. Countrywoman Olga Danilova of Russia was second with Bente Skari of Norway third.

The third place finish put Skari ahead of Czech skier Katerina Neumannova in the overall standings with 486 points. Neumannova is only 6 points back after 11 events with Russian Julija Tchepalova third.
