UGANDA / DRC - 2002-02-21

Uganda has deployed troops in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo to help quell ethnic clashes. Fighting between the Lendu and Hema ethnic groups erupted recently in areas that had been occupied by Ugandan troops. Those troops were sent in several years ago to support rebels fighting the government but had withdrawn to the Bunia area as part of the Lusaka peace accord for the DRC. Major Shaban Bantariza is the spokesman for the Ugandan People’s Defense Force. He told English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua that Uganda sent troops back to the troubled areas two weeks ago.
