UGANDA / HUMAN RIGHTS - 2002-02-21

The US-based Human Rights Watch urges the UN Security Council to take action against Uganda for being what it calls an important agent of unrest in the eastern Democratic of Congo. English to Africa reporter Richard Kotey spoke with Suleiman Baldo, the senior researcher in the Africa Division of Human Rights Watch in New York. He says Uganda is involved in exploiting factions within the rebel groups in eastern Congo to promote its own interests in the area. Mr. Baldo says in the process, Uganda is continuing to commit human rights violations. The Security Council will be discussing the issue in the coming weeks.
