Soccer: Deportivo de La Coruna Reaches Quarterfinals

Another Spanish football (soccer) club has reached the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup tournament.

Deportivo de La Coruna joined Real Madrid Tuesday with a 2-0 win in England against host Arsenal. The result in group "D" means Italian power Juventus is virtually eliminated after suffering a 3-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen of Germany.

Already guaranteed a berth among the final eight teams with two games remaining, eight-time champion Real Madrid fielded virtually a reserve team and still defeated group "C" opponent Sparta Prague, 3-0. All three goals came in a 10 minute spell midway through the second half.

F.C. Porto of Portugal stayed in contention in group "C" by beating second place Panathinaikos of Greece, 2-1.

The tournament continues later Wednesday. A.S. Roma of Italy and the Spanish club Barcelona can clinch places in the quarterfinal round. A berth also awaits the winner between 1999 finalists Manchester United of England and Bayern Munich of Germany.

Roma hosts the Turkish team Galatasaray. Barcelona hosts last year's UEFA Cup winner Liverpool of England in the other Group "B" game. Boavista of Portugal has been nearly eliminated from group "B" while Nantes of France is already out.
