Sokoto Governor Attahiru Bafarawa discusses Sharia ruling - 2002-03-25

A Sharia court in Nigeria's Sokoto State has freed Safiya Husaini, who had been sentenced to death by stoning. Last October a lower Sharia court found the 35-year-old woman guilty of adultery after she gave birth to a child out of wedlock. She denied the charge and later appealed. The case has made headlines in Nigeria and around the world. Last week, Nigeria's justice minister declared Sharia unconstitutional as practiced by twelve northern states. The governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, is now speaking out. He told reporter Josephine Kamara that they will not adhere to the justice minister's declaration.
