Zimbabwe Opposition Report Details Vote Fraud - 2002-03-26

update

Zimbabwe's main opposition party has released a report detailing what it calls systematic government manipulation of this month's presidential election.

The report, which was released Tuesday by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), alleges widespread vote-rigging by government agents.

MDC officials say ruling party militants chased opposition election observers away from polling stations, especially in rural areas, making it impossible to monitor the voting and counting processes.

Government officials say longtime President Robert Mugabe beat MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai in this month's poll, but Western observers said the election was neither free nor fair.

The Commonwealth has suspended Zimbabwe from its meetings for one year. The governments of Germany, Denmark and Canada have already frozen their aid programs to Zimbabwe in light of what they call significant flaws in the voting process.
