Liberian Rebels Attack Kakata - 2002-04-03

update

Liberian rebels have attacked the town of Kakata, as fighting with government forces moves closer to Monrovia, the capital.

The town is located about 55 kilometers from Monrovia, on the main highway linking Monrovia to neighboring Ivory Coast and the Republic of Guinea. There was no immediate word on casualty figures in the attack by the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy rebel group.

The rebels have in recent weeks attacked diamond-rich government strongholds in northern Lofa County.

Violence has claimed at least 200,000 lives in Liberia over the past 12 years.
