NHL: Detroit Beats Colorado 2-1 in Playoff Action - 2002-05-23


The Detroit Red Wings have taken a two games to one lead in their best of seven National Hockey League semifinal playoff series with the Colorado Avalanche.

The Red Wings beat the Avalanche 2-1 in overtime Wednesday in Denver. Defenseman Fredrik Olausson scored the winning tally 13 minutes into the extra session. Dominik Hasek stopped 21 shots.

Detroit took 44 shots on goal - twice as many as Colorado. The Wings have the NHL's best record on the road with 24 wins, 13 losses and five draws. Three of Detroit's road wins came in Denver.

The winner of the Colorado - Detroit series will clinch the Western Conference title and advance to the Stanley Cup championship series against the Eastern Conference winner.

The battle for the Eastern Conference title continues Thursday when the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Maple Leafs in Toronto for game four of their best of seven series. The Hurricanes lead the series two games to one.
