For the first time at the World Cup football finals in South Korea and Japan, a game has been decided by a penalty kick shootout.
Spain has reached the quarterfinals with a 3-2 penalty kick shootout win over Ireland in nearby Suwon. The night belonged to 21-year-old Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who saved one Irish penalty kick during regulation and blocked two of their attempts in the shootout.
Spain scored first in the match on a goal by Fernando Morientes in the eighth minute. The penalty kick by Ireland's Ian Hart in the 63rd minute was blocked, and teammate Kevin Kilbane struck the rebound wide of the post.
Just when Spain looked like it had the game won in regulation, Ireland was awarded a second penalty kick in the 90th minute when Fernando Hierro nearly jerked the shirt off the back of Ireland's Niall Quinn in the box after a free kick. Robbie Keane converted the penalty, making it 1-1 and sending the game to extra time.
The Spaniards played through the entire 30 minutes of so-called "sudden death" with 10 men, as Albeda was out with an injury.
In the shootout, Ireland converted only the first and last of its five chances. Spain struck its first two, and missed its next two before Gaizka Mendieta scored the decider.
With the 3-2 shootout victory over Ireland, Spain now moves on to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Tuesday's game between Italy and co-host South Korea.
