It has been two years since President Olusegun Obasanjo set up a panel to investigate corruption in Nigeria. Critics say the panel, known as the Anti-corruption Commission, is a waste of taxpayer funds because it has been unable to significantly reduce corruption; they say it should be disbanded. The chairman of the commission, Justice Mustapha Akanbi, told English to Africa reporter Chinedu Offor that he has investigated several people and will continue to look into complaints brought before his panel. He says corruption is endemic in Nigeria and the effort to reduce it will take several more years. Justice Akanbi rejected allegations that he has refused to go after the rich and powerful in his anti-corruption crusade.
