Kudinov Wins 25k Freestyle Event at European Swimming Championships - 2002-07-26


Russian Yuri Kudinov has won the men's 25-kilometer freestyle event at the European swimming championships in Germany while France's Virginie Dedieu won the solo synchronized swimming title.

Kudinov, the defending world champion finished the race in 5:09:47.4 with Gilles Rondy of France second, more than 8:00 back. David Meca of Spain was third.

Afterward, Kudinov said the water temperature in Lake Templin at Potsdam gave many swimmers trouble, with Meca saying he struggled in his last lap because of the cold water.

Meanwhile, Dedieu won the solo-synchronized title with 99.100 points ahead of Russian Anastasia Davydova (97.900) and Gemma Mengual of Spain (97.100).
