Nigeria /  AIDS - 2002-08-23

In Nigeria, health experts say the extent of the AIDS pandemic has been underreported. They say the stigma attached to the disease leads the public to avoid being tested, making it impossible to determine its full extent. Dr. Demola Olajide, a physician and the Oyo State Assistant Secretary for the Association of Private and General Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, says the government should make laws that ensure the rights of HIV-positive people in the workplace and at home. He believes this would encourage more people to get tested. And he says to encourage more people to get tested, society must accept and assist victims of the disease - and not treat them as outcasts.
