Controversial Rapper Eminem Dominates MTV Video Awards - 2002-08-30

Controversial rap artist Eminem was booed at the MTV Video Music Awards despite walking away with four honors, including the evening's most prestigious prize, Video of the Year.

Eminem, whose real name is Marshal Mathers, also won awards for Best Male Video, Best Rap Video and Best Direction in a Video. He was nominated in six categories.

Fans attending the event at New York City's famed Radio City Music Hall began to jeer and boo the rapper when, during an acceptance speech, he deliberately insulted artist Moby, with whom he has an ongoing feud. Mathers later apologized to the audience for the outburst.

MTV also gave awards to Pink for Best Female Video and Best Dance Video, No Doubt for Best Group Video and Best Pop Video, and Avril Lavigne for Best New Artist.

Other winners include The White Stripes for Breakthrough Video, Best Special Effects and Best Editing, Linkin Park for Best Rock Video, and Mary J. Blige for Best R&B Video. Best Hip Hop Video went to Ja Rule.

Saturday Night Live comedian Jimmy Fallon hosted the trendy event.
