Sustainable Development Summit Ends In Johannesburg - 2002-09-04

Delegates at the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development have formally adopted a final plan of implementation on poverty and the environment. The plan, adopted Wednesday at the summit's final plenary meeting in South Africa, calls for the increased use of renewable energy forms, but sets no firm targets or timetables.

However, many environmental groups walked out of the summit before the final meeting, saying the U-S government has weakened the final plan by opposing set targets for renewable energy use.

Some environmental activists also booed U-S Secretary of State Colin Powell as he told delegates the United States will commit more funds to development aid and fighting global warming.
