World Basketball Semifinalists Have Off Day

Defending champion Yugoslavia, New Zealand, Germany and undefeated Argentina all had the day off Friday at the World Basketball Championship tournament as they prepare for their semifinal games on Saturday. The remaining teams were on the court in classification contests.

In early play Friday, Russia defeated Angola, 77-66. Guard Zakhar Pachoutine led five Russian players in double figures with 14 points. Despite the win, center Alexander Bachminov said the team is not happy. "Our team was very disappointed we did not play in the quarterfinals or semifinals. But we need to play to the finish and win both games," he said.

Turkey also has had a disappointing tournament, but came away with a 94-86 victory over China. Turkish coach Aydin Ors said his team was cohesive. "One of the major emphasis points today was our high assist count, which showed we played like a team," he said. "All of our players helped out each other. Tomorrow we have our last game in the world championship, and we will to win."

The results mean Russia will play Turkey for ninth place while Angola faces China for 11th place. None of the teams have met before now in the tournament and will play before the semifinals.
