US Troops Uncover al-Qaida Weapons, Model of 757 Airplane - 2002-09-23

U.S. troops tracking al-Qaida terrorists have made an unsettling find in Afghanistan reminiscent of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

U.S. Special Operations forces patrolling Sunday near Deh Rawood north of Kandahar uncovered weapons, documents and a model of a 757 airliner with Air China markings.

Two of the four aircraft commandeered by terrorists for last year's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were 757's.

Pentagon officials say they are not sure if the find is significant. But it was remarkable enough to merit mention in the latest report issued by defense officials on anti-terrorist sweeps in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, other U.S. troops involved in yet another anti-terrorist sweep near the southeastern town of Khost also ran into something unusual when they seized weapons and ammunition. Female soldiers discovered hand grenades hidden under the clothing of some women they searched.
