How Many Days Should Voting Last In Nigeria? - 2002-09-27

In Nigeria – a new bump in the relationship between President Olusegun Obasanjo and lawmakers who recently voted to impeach him.

The latest disagreement is over the upcoming local and presidential elections – whether they should be held in one day or over several days. The House of Representatives favors a one-day vote.

When President Obasanjo vetoed legislation to that effect, the lawmakers overrode his veto. But some members of the House are criticizing their colleagues, saying their action could lead to chaos in the voting.

One of the critics is Jonathan Asake, a member of the House representing the northern state of Kaduna. He told English to Africa reporter Chinedu Offor that Mr. Obasanjo’s enemies are influencing the House leadership.
