Indonesian police say at least 54 people are dead and more than 100 wounded after a bomb blast on the resort island of Bali in the popular Kuta beach area.

A U.S. Embassy official in the Indonesian capital Jakarta says a car bomb went off outside a crowded nightclub in the Kuta beach area, a popular spot for foreign travelers. Witnesses say the explosion broke glass hundreds of meters away.

The official says another blast took place 50 meters away from the U.S. Consulate in nearby Denpasar. There are no reports of any injuries at the consulate.

Police say bomb squads have been sent to the Kuta beach site.
