The job of the First Lady, wife of the president of the United States, has remained constant from the time of Martha Washington in 1789 to Laura Bush in 2002.

But if the role of First Lady hasn't changed, the lives of the people who so far have served in the job, have changed. In this edition of Dateline, Ania Zalewski reports on the new responsibilities facing the First Ladies of 21st century America.
