Zambia is one of the southern African countries facing severe food shortages. For example, in some areas of the country, villagers say they only eat once a week. International relief agencies have described the situation as critical.
English to Africa reporter Kellys Kaunda is in the southern region of Zambia and filed a report. He visited the Kolomo District, about 500 kilometers south of the capital, Lusaka and Dundumwezi Constituency, about 40 kilometers southwest of Kolomo.
Villagers say food is scarce and some people have resorted to crime. They say some of those arrested for stealing food have died of hunger while in detention. HIV/AIDS has added to the problem, weakening the immune systems of those badly in need of food.
