A Call For Tolerance In Nigeria - 2002-11-25

Calm returned to Nigeria’s northern city of Kaduna after four days of disturbances linked to the Miss World Beauty contest, which has now been relocated to London.

English to Africa reporter Richard Kotey spoke with Harruna Atta, Editor of the Ghanaian Daily Newspaper, The Accra Mail. He said the violence has affected Nigeria’s image worldwide. And he said that would scare investors from coming into the country.

He said the responsibility for the violence is now right on the head of the media. He said the media should know how to discuss sensitive issues, that could easily provoke a segment of the society. He described the Kaduna violence as a terrible tragedy, which should also be a lesson to the media.

He also said tolerance must be the key word for all religions. He asked Nigeria to adhere to the constitution, which he says must be their answer to their religious intolerance.
