Attack on Jewish Settlement Kills 1 in West Bank - 2003-01-17

One Israeli has been killed and at least two others wounded in a shooting attack on a Jewish settlement near the divided West Bank city of Hebron.

Israeli authorities say two Palestinian gunmen infiltrated the Kiryat Arba settlement and fired on a home. One of the attackers was killed and Israeli Defense Forces began a search for the other.

Several hundred Jews live in Hebron among more than 100,000 Palestinians. Tensions have been high in the area since November when 12 Israeli security personal were killed in an ambush by Palestinian gunmen on the road between Kiryat Arba and Hebron.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called last week on militant groups to abstain from attacks in order not to influence the Israeli elections on January 28.

Earlier Friday, the Israeli navy blew up a raft carrying explosives off the coast of the northern Gaza Strip about four kilometers from the Jewish settlement of Dugit.
