It didn't occur without gunfights, but Yemenis voted Sunday for their third parliament since the country unified in 1990.
At least 15 people were wounded during gun battles, mostly between backers of rival candidates, prompting officials to close three polling stations. The violence occurred despite the presence of 100,000 military troops deployed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh at polling stations across Yemen.
About 1,300 candidates were vying for 301 parliamentary seats, with the governing General People's Congress fielding the most candidates, 297.
More than eight million Yemeni citizens were eligible to vote and election officials said the turnout was high. Election results won't be known for several days.
Yemen is home to many Islamist militants sympathetic to Osama bin Laden's terror network, al-Qaida, but the country has supported U-S efforts to fight terrorism.
