Coast Guard Arrests 6 Illegal Cuban Immigrants Near Florida Keys

update

The U.S. Coast Guard has arrested six illegal Cuban immigrants trying to bring their boat into the Florida Keys.

Officials said at least two of the men jumped in the water early Thursday, when the Coast Guard intercepted their boat. Television reports broadcast images of the two men trying to evade Coast Guard boats and swim ashore.

Last week, three illegal Cuban migrants reached U.S. soil after refusing Coast Guard help and jumping from their raft into waters near Key Largo, Florida.

Under U.S. law, Cubans who make it to U.S. soil are generally allowed to stay in the country and eventually apply for residency. Cubans intercepted at sea are usually repatriated.

Cuba argues the policy encourages illegal immigration.
