Mozambican Star Maria Mutola Wins In Oregon - 2003-05-26

Mozambique's Olympic and world champion, Maria "The Maputo Express" Mutola, has made a successful return to the northwestern U.S. city of Eugene, Oregon.

Maria scored her 11th straight victory May 24 in the Prefontaine Classic, winning the women's 800-meters race in a world leading 1:57.98. It was a homecoming of sorts for Maria, since she went to high school in Eugene as part of an international exchange program.

Two Kenyans, Abraham Chebii and Olympic bronze medalist Bernard Lagat, also set world leading times for men on the track in Eugene. Abraham led a Kenyan sweep of the top three places in the men's 5,000-meters race, clocking just over 13 minutes, eight seconds. Meanwhile, Bernard Lagat won the men's mile race in 3:50.21.
