The U.S. National Weather Service says Tropical Storm Claudette weakened overnight, but authorities on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula should monitor the storm as it approaches.
Early Thursday, Caludette was moving in a westerly direction about 315 kilometers south-southwest of Grand Cayman in the Cayman islands.
A National Weather Service statement says the maximum sustained winds of the storm have decreased to about 95 kilometers per hour, and that little change in strength is expected in the next 24 hours. Officials say however, the storm could increase in strength later in the week.
Tropical storm warnings and a hurricane watch remain in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula from Chetumal to Cabo Catoche.
On Wednesday, Claudette raged off Jamaica's southern coast prompting authorities to urge people in flood-prone areas to be alert. The storm is the third of the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season.
